WELCOME!
For many this type of website may be a new concept. It is designed for you to easily contribute and collaborate information for the education and support of our community and island.

NantucketSynergy.org is a cooperative eco-community Wiki for Nantucket Island. It is destined to become the best resource for solutions moving us toward a more sustainable local economy and environment. Here everyone can easily contribute positive and constructive information about environmental issues, renewable energy, natural health, local farming and related topics supporting the well being and independence of our community and ecosystem. The focus is on solutions and not contributing to the problems. You can easily add pages and we can help build the website together!

The friendly "Wiki" technology built into this website allows everyone to easily share information, create discussions, build solutions, easily contact one another, and build the site organically from our community. If you have something that will be of benefit please feel free to add content and comments to this site. You do not need to have any html or special computer skills... it is all done for you behind the scenes.

Please be sure to check the codes of conduct section. Focusing on positive creative solutions while identifying the challenge is the tone. Everyone may not always agree, but we will be professional and kind to each other.

When contributing to this website please help by sharing information that will be of benefit to the entire community. Everyone of us has a contribution to make and here is where you can influence something bigger than yourself to take action - like local boards, organizations and state governments. Who knows... we may even be able to plant a seed in the global consciousness by the example we set.

Nantucket Island is a special place to live for multiple reasons. We have a strong sense of community, very creative and talented residents, all surrounded by an astonishing natural beauty. Our unique remote location affords many advantages and challenges. Economic, demographic and environmental trends concern many in our community. Rising fuel costs, rising insurance costs, rising construction and maintenance costs, and the importation of most of our essential goods leaves our community vulnerable.

Moving toward solutions that localize our economy models the great American values of self and community reliance bringing more stability and security to the island. By utilizing renewable energy sources so effectively that we start selling energy back to the mainland instead of our current dependency, practicing new recycling technologies, energy conservation, increasing and supporting local organic farming practices that can provide a larger proportion of our imported produce, using new technologies and old island ingenuity, we can protect and enhance existing qualities of our community and meet the challenges of the future.

The Trust is a nonprofit, Massachusetts-chartered corporation that was formed in 1984. This is a research and educational facility of the state university system that offers undergraduate courses utilizing the Island as a natural science laboratory. The Field Station also provides facilities and technical support for research projects conducted by other universities and conservation groups. While the property is not open to the public, the Station's permanent staff is always interested in meeting with visiting investigators whose interests include marine biology, coastal plant communities, coastal geology, and other topics regarding the Island's natural history. Such meetings can be arranged by calling the Director at the telephone number listed above.

"Natural Currents Energy Services, LLC, a Highland, N.Y.-based firm is proposing to generate three gigawatts of power by installing tidal energy generators in Nantucket Sound between Nantucket and Chappaquiddick on Martha's Vineyard. That is about 4.2 times the amount of electricity - around 70 megawatts - flowing to Nantucket right now."

George Bush was castigated by European diplomats and found himself isolated yesterday after a special conference on climate change ended without any progress.

European ministers, diplomats and officials attending the Washington conference were scathing, particularly in private, over Mr Bush's failure once again to commit to binding action on climate change.

Top 20 things that are more dangerous to children than lead paint in Mattel toys.
The mainstream media is amusingly irrational when it comes to reporting scare stories. The latest example involves the lead content of Mattel toys made in China. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a third recall of Mattel toys involving over 700,000 toys containing unacceptably high levels of lead paint (over .06 percent lead). Irrational parents are rushing back to retailers in droves, turning in their Mattel toys to "save their children" from the dangers of lead paint. Mattel, for its part, is being rightly blasted in the media for selling shoddy products made with toxic heavy metals. (News Target.com/ 9.5.07 by Mike Adams)

A small but significant milestone happened a few days ago. One of the first solar energy electric systems was approved by the HDC. This full house system will replace the electric fossil fuel bill! I am so proud of the visionary decision of the current board of the Historic District Commission and sincerely hope renewable energy options become more and more accepted and promoted.
