Earth Day Nantcuket 2008

Welcome to the Earth Day Nantucket 2008 website!

WHEN: Sunday, April 20th 2008 from 12:30pm to 5pm.
WHERE: This year the venue will be at Bartlett's Ocean View Farm.

I thank you...
the community of Nantucket thanks you...
and our Mother Earth thanks you...
for your participation and sponsorships of Earth Day Nantucket 2008!

I was very impressed with all the attendance and the great information at everyone's tables. I am also very grateful for all the nice comments many folks had to say.

I will be posting more updates and photos in the next few days...

A special thanks goes to our Board of Selectmen who's vision in signing the ICLEI Resolution was a clear indication and refreshing step in having our local government take a leadership role in sustainable development and environmental responsibility. Special thanks also goes to Michele Whelan, from Sustainable Nantucket Green Council, for her persistence in setting the stage for this to happen. A number of folks did not know what ICLEI was so here it their website. Below is a brief synopsis of what they are doing.

Here is the ICLEI website.

Another special thanks to Jill Sandole and Bartlett's Farm for not only offering a wonderful venue this year but also for being so kind and helpful with all the little details.

And yet another special thanks to our Mother Earth... for providing such a beautiful spring day!

We have some extra shirts left over and they will be available at Bartlett's Farm and Color Graphics for the next few days. If you did not get one or know anyone that would like one please let them know. All the money from the sales of the shirts is for the Small Friends LEED building. The printing of the shirts was paid for by the sponsors and a major part by Color Graphics.

Celebrating the Earth and bringing attention to the things we can do on a daily basis is vital to the most important issues of our time. I firmly believe that we, as an island community can be an example for the rest of the world to emulate in terms of our environmental responsibility and energy independence. Focusing on Solutions is the key to moving forward.

We can solve this. Here is a great website for more solutions.. Click Here.

So let's all keep moving forward with solutions... :)

And please consider joining a simple solution by upgrading your home to solar energy.

Here are the highlights for this community event:

•This year we will be handing out beautiful full color "Earth Day Nantucket 2008" T-shirts for a suggested donation of $8.00 each. The proceeds of which will be donated toward tree planting at the new LEED certifed Small Friends school. What a great way to make your green turn into more green!

•Nantucket Land Council will be showing the working aquifer model and to try and reduce those plastic bags they will have quality canvas tote bags to hand out.

•Presentations on:
-Upgrading your home to solar energy
-Reducing your carbon footprint and improving your health via a two wheeled vehicle... :)
-Green building
-Sustainable Nantucket presentation
-Solar Thermal Technologies
... and possibly more.

•We will also be showing short documentary screenings of the "E2 Sustainable Living" series during the celebration... very interesting and professional... narration by Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt.

•For the kids... there will be a recycled art project with Jeanne van Etten.
She will coordinate the Eco-Creature workshop & Parade.
We should also have some fun with earth friendly face painting.

•Pick up a 15% discount coupon for Green Products from Marine Home Center.

•It is wonderful to have the participation of Sustainable Nantucket with the "Wave of Change" sculpture. Created by the Sustainable Nantucket Green Council in collaboration with the children of Nantucket. The Wave itself was designed by SN Green Council Volunteer Dylan Wallace and the creatures who “live” on it were designed and built by children from all of the schools on the island. It is made entirely from recycled materials and painted with non-toxic milk paint. The 'Wave of Change" will debut at Bartlett Farm on Sunday the 20th and then be moved to the Atheneum courtyard for Earth Day on Tuesday the 22nd. It will also be on display at various locations throughout the summer. You will also start to notice some of the creatures around town the week before Earth Day. Look below for some pictures of the kids at work!

Earth Day Nantucket is a local coalition of concerned families, teachers, elected leaders, sustainable businesses and groups that work to increase public awareness of environmental issues through Earth Day events and activities. As a not-for-profit endeavor all donations will go toward promotion and green endeavors.

May every day be a celebration of our appreciation of our one and only EARTH.

In-joy,
Bruce

ICLEI Mission Statement:
Our mission

Through its campaigns and strategic initiatives, ICLEI seeks to improve global environmental conditions through the actions of local governments. Our mandate states that ICLEI shall build an active and committed municipal membership of local spheres of government (local and regional governments and authorities) as well as international, regional, national, and sub-national local government associations.

Through performance-based campaigns and initiatives, ICLEI's US Office provides local governments in the United States with technical and policy assistance as well as access to a valuable national peer network. ICLEI's basic premise is that locally-designed initiatives can provide an effective and cost-efficient way to achieve local, national, and global sustainability objectives.

Vision-
In the United States, ICLEI is a growing association of local governments dedicated to sustainable development with a strong national presence. ICLEI works with these local governments to push the boundaries of traditional leadership in the US and achieve stronger, accelerated movement toward sustainability goals through measured performance and tangible results.

About-
ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability is an international association of more than 650 local governments. Cities, counties, towns and villages around the world are members of ICLEI. Since 1993, ICLEI and has grown from a handful of local governments participating in a pilot project to more than 300 who are providing national leadership on climate protection and sustainable development.

ICLEI's mission is to improve the global environment through local action. On the issue of global warming, for example, we provide resources, tools, peer networking, best practices, and technical assistance to help local governments measure and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in their communities.

ICLEI USA runs three primary programs: Cities for Climate Protection®, Climate Resilient Communities, and Communities 21.
